The Case Matters: On Presentation Boxes for Fine Firearms

When a fine shotgun left a London maker a century ago, it left in a fitted oak-and-leather case with its cleaning rod, snap caps and a brass plaque. The case was not an afterthought. It was the frame around the picture, and it is why so many of those guns survive today in the condition they do.

We build cases in that tradition, for the same reason.

The box

Walnut is the house wood; ebony, burl and macassar are available for a piece that calls for them. Joints are cut and fitted by hand. The exterior may be left in oiled timber or wrapped in full-grain leather — black, oxblood, tan, or matched to a holster made for the same project. Hardware is brass, nickel or blacked steel, chosen to echo the finish of the firearm inside.

The interior

The interior is what makes a case this case. The velvet — olive, oxblood, ivory, or a colour drawn from the piece — is laid over a base cut to the exact silhouette of the firearm, its magazines, its grips and whatever else belongs to it. The pistol sits in its own shape and cannot move. Nothing rattles; nothing rubs.

The details

• Engraved plaque. Brass or silver, hand-lettered or engraved in the same style as the piece — a name, a date, a crest, a dedication.
• Hidden drawers. A slim drawer beneath the main bed for ammunition, documents or a second set of grips.
• Lighting. A discreet lid-activated light, for pieces that will be displayed.
• Matching accessories. Holsters, magazine pouches, a cleaning kit in the same leather — coordinated so the set reads as one object.

The archive

Every case leaves with a folder: the archival prints from our photography, a description of the work carried out, the materials, and the date. In thirty years it will tell whoever opens the lid exactly what they are holding and who made it. That, more than anything, is the point.
