Poured, Cured, Carved: How Custom Resin Grips Are Made

Resin grips began, for us, as a way to give a pistol colour and depth that no metal finish could. They have become something closer to a personal object — a place to cast a fragment of something that matters.

The pour

We work with a stabilised epoxy resin poured into moulds sized for the frame in question. The look is decided at this stage. A galaxy or nebula pour layers pigments and metallic powders so they swirl in three dimensions. Marble uses two or three tones folded once and left. Pearlescent relies on a single mica pigment that shifts with the angle of light. Transparent is exactly that — clear resin, cast over whatever lies beneath.

Inclusions

This is where the work becomes personal. Mother of pearl, gold leaf and buffalo horn are house materials. Beyond those, clients have brought us meteorite fragments, a piece of a grandfather's watch dial, sand from a particular beach, a dried flower, a spent cartridge from a first hunt. These are suspended in the clear layer so they read as though they float. We advise on what will survive the resin and what will not; organic material must be dried and sealed first.

Curing

The blank cures slowly, under controlled temperature, over days rather than hours. Fast cures trap bubbles and stress the material; slow cures give a blank that is dense, clear and stable enough to machine.

Machining to the frame

The blank is milled to the exact geometry of the frame — screw holes, bevels, the relief for the mainspring housing or the magazine release. This is the step that separates a bespoke grip from a decorative one: it fits like the factory panel, only better, because it was cut to your specific pistol.

Texture and finish

A grip can be left smooth and polished to a mirror, which shows the pour to its fullest. Or it can be checkered, stippled, or carved with a border so there is purchase where the hand needs it and clarity where the eye wants it. We often texture the front half and leave the rear polished, so the pour is visible in the hand.

Pairing
